And so we are sitting on the side of this mountain, our kids spent the easter weekend with us and my eldest daughter makes the point that if the weather turns nasty and we are house bound for a few days, her mother and I could kill each other out of boredom.
Now we are by no means strangers to the mountains and the sometimes fickle weather, and have been house bound many times, but it seems, to my daughter at least, that we are incapable of occupying our time. Now whether or not there is any merit to her argument is not the purpose of this blog, but what is, is what she did to assist us with our possible predicament.
A short while before they leave, I have need to fire up my laptop, yes I know, but work is never far away in this age of connectivity. Anyway, I digress. When, after the usual age it takes to boot up, I notice a new folder on my desktop marked "bad weather entertainment". Further investigation proves that 260 gigs of movies and things to watch have been supplied.
Now, I have heard eldest daughter and friends talk of a tv series called "Dexter". Not really being a tv buff, I know nothing of this series, but I see that she has downloaded six, yes folks, six season of him, amongst other stuff, for our perusal, should we so desire.
At the end of the easter weekend, the kids have to leave and travel the 7 to 8 hour trip home. It was youngest daughters birthday on easter Monday, so they decided to stay for monday night and would leave very early Tuesday morning to return home, as eldest had to work at mid day. So 3am we were up, and the two daughters with respective boyfriends, depart.
Now we are very fortunate to live in a very well developed country in Africa, with good roads, generally, and modern infrastructure, mostly, but driving attitudes are, largely and sadly, third world. The reason for mentioning this is that for 4 to 5 hours of the journey home, they would have to travel some very dangerous roads, and as mentioned, whilst the road home is good and wide, some of the pricks that use it turn tonnes of metal into high speed
lethal weapons.
So this is the scenario, it is 3.30am, pitch dark, but clear skys, and our kids are slicing their way through the darkness homeward. As you can imagine, sleep for Mom and Dad is not a possibility at this time. So what to do? We reach for the laptop, set it up on the wife's vanity case between us, we snuggle down under the feather duvet and begin... with BlackBerry at my side, the kids and I keeping in touch on BBM.......Dexter, season one, episode one....
8 hours later, the kids are safe...YAY.... and season one of Dexter is almost complete.
The next few days are busy, unexpected guests, fantastic weather, and so on, untill yesterday, when by mid afternoon, the weather starts to turn and storms are predicted, so we batten down the hatches, bring in enough firewood and with steaming mugs of coffee for me and tea for her.....we fire up the laptop.
Cut to 3am this morning......Dexter, season 2, done and dusted.
What a deliciously evil man he is..... Ok, the two ladies in his life in season 2 were somewhat scrumptious too!! -))
